On Fridays I participate in BookBeginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and The Friday 56 - hosted by Freda’s Voice. Both involve sharing excerpts from a current book - the beginning and - you guessed it - page 56.
Dead in the Water by Irna van Zyl
The book opens with a car chase on our South African roads - always a disaster waiting to happen.
The tension starts from the opening paragraph.
Viewpoint is Storm van der Merwe, a suspended cop - and she isn't happy about it.
The best translation of "Padvark" is "road-hog". Pad=road, vark=pig
Tell me what you're reading in the comments, and I'll pay you a visit.
Happy reading everyone.

I've never heard of this but you can't go wrong with a car chase! :)
Hmm someone was demoted? Sounds interesting.
I am currently reading Starglass.
Happy Friday!

This one seems like an okay read. Thanks for mentioning it. :-)
Hi Bev! I've seen this but I haven't really looked into it. Will soon! I've started with the new Deon Meyer and kind-off featured it in my Friday Meets. But it is currently only available in Afrikaans.... But you are welcome to have a look at my post. Hope you will have a good weekend! http://marelithalkink.blogspot.co.za/2016/09/friday-meets-another-one-down-drain.html
A cover like that always gets my attention. I'd have to think about this one because of the writing, but I do like a good murder mystery.

Sounds like one I would enjoy. I think the setting in South Africa adds to the appeal. I alway like to read books from places I have visited.
I like the way it sounds when I read it, especially the beginning!
Happy Labor Day weekend!
I'm always eager to read books about detectives solving cases...and the interactions between them as they work is always enjoyable to me.
Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.
Thanks for sharing this new-to-me book and author. Sounds like an engrossing read--hope you enjoy it.
Great post! I hope you like the book :)
Great setting and protagonist!
That's a great beginning. I can imagine her tension as being tailgated. LOVE the term: padvark.
Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment.

Oh, this one sounds good! :)
This sounds interesting - I have to admit that I've never read anything by a S. African writer - I'm going to have to rectify this - here is my Friday meme
It sounds like the detective pulling rank from which she was demoted has guts.
Sounds like quite the thriller! And I love how she's taking charge (even though it's risky). Happy reading!
