BookBeginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and The Friday 56 - hosted by Freda’s Voice are the hosting sites for the Friday link ups, where we discover more books, and make friends. Both involve sharing excerpts from a current book - the beginning and - you guessed it - page 56.
What am I reading? Well, I'm so glad you asked. It's
Interestingly, when you know the history is about a ship that goes down that is carrying mainly black men who have signed up to join the allied forces in World War 1, that this starts with a waiter in a French restaurant. The SS Mendi sunk off the Isle of Wight. What unfolds with the French waiter is so shocking, I was drawn in right from the start.
Ok there we go...things are clearly going down. And by down, I mean down. What I'm loving about the book is that even though it's history, its just so very personal that I can't stop reading. In my opinion, that's exactly how historical fiction should be.
What're you reading?
Thanks for popping over. Leave me a comment and I'll check our your post.
This sounds excellent. You had me at the opening comments!
My Friday 56 from The Shack
I think this would be right up my street.
Those covers are gorgeous.

This one seems like it could be okay. I hope you enjoy it. :-)
Sounds very exciting!
Such an intriguing concept for a book! I will have to check this one out. Thanks so much for sharing it. :)
Oh wow, I had not yet heard about this one, and it sounds excellent. Thanks for sharing
This sounds like the kind of historical fiction I enjoy too and I love that it's about something I know nothing about. I'm adding this to my TBR!
I like the fact that you featured both cover art options and whilst I quite prefer the quirkiness of the second image, I think that the first option sets the scene and is totally relevant to the book's premise.
I had no idea about the history of the SS Mendi, despite living quite close to the south coast of England and the Isle-Of-Wight, so I have just spent an interesting few minutes boning up on the facts surrounding the event.
This may not be one for me, but I hope that you enjoy the read :)
That feels kind of like an ominous warning. Hope you enjoy your weekend!
I like the sound of this. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
This is a new to me book and I love the sound of it - I love historical fiction especially when it's tied to wars (I have no idea why but it's just a thing for me). Thanks for stopping by by my Friday meme earlir
This sounds interesting, and I'm afraid it will be a bit sad.
I'm reading a cozy mystery, as always, cause they're me thing. :-) It's called CARAMEL CRUSH by Jenn McKinlay. My BB and 56 are both from THE SILENCE OF THE FLAUNS by Layra Bradford. It's book two in her Dessert Squad Mystery series. I'd love for you and your readers to check out mine . . . http://tinyurl.com/LisaKsBookReviewsTSotF
This sounds great - I love the snippets there! :)
You've left me wanting more! :-) Have a great week ahead!
