Friday Book Nap

BookBeginnings is a weekly meme, hosted by Rose City Reader. To participate, share the opening lines and your thoughts about a book you're reading, or about to.

Beginning:
My mother died with her head in another man's lap. The car collided head-on with a milk tanker, which in turn crashed into an oak tree, sending acorns pinging and bouncing off the bodywork like hailstones. Mr Shearer lost an appendage. I lost my mother. Fate laughs at probabilities.
My thoughts:

A mother and her teenage daughter are found murdered in a remote farmhouse. Joe - the clinical psychologist who doesn't want to do this anymore -
reluctantly admits he has to get involved. One of his ex-students is already part of the drama, and seems intent on making matters worse. Realising that he is  risking drawing his ex-wife and two daughters into a threatening situation, the tension mounts from all angles.

The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice every Friday.

How it works is you...Grab a book, any book. Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.) Find any sentence, (or few, just don't spoil it)

Here's my P56

"What are you doing out here?"

"Nothing."
"Really?"
"I just arrived. I was about to knock." There are several beats of silence. I can hear crickets chirping in the grass and water splashing  over the weir at the bottom of the hill.

"Does Mummy know you're coming?"
"I was going to call her."
"But you're here already."
"I know. Does she have a visitor?"
"No."
"Who owns the hatch?"
"Oh, that's mine."

The conversation is between Joe and his eldest daughter in Close Your Eyes by Michael Robotham.

If you're interested - here's my review.

Tell me what you're reading this weekend, and I'll pay you a friendly visit. Happy reading everyone.

I'm quite intrigued by the 56, that is, after I picked my jaw off the floor from reading the beginning. :-)
Happy weekend!

Yes, it's quite a shocker. He doesn't usually write like that, and it's no indication of the tone of the book. On the other hand, there are some awesome one liners. Thanks for hosting.

Hi Bev,

I have been recommended to the writing of Michael Robotham several times by work colleagues, however I have yet to read any of his books.

It would be good to know if you consider this book to work well as a stand alone, or if I need to go back and pick up the back-story from the first book. As this is book 8 in the series, I am kind of hoping that I can dive right in!

It was definitely the opening lines which sold this one to me, why would I not want to keep reading and find out the consequences of this accident discovery!

Thanks for sharing and enjoy the book and your weekend :)

Hi Yvonne. I hate to read books out of order. For the character development of Joe, Julianne and the kids, I would start at the beginning of the series, which is Suspect (also called The Night Ferry). If you want to see if you like Michael Robotham first, then start with Life or Death, which is a brilliant stand alone - he published it at the beginning of last year. It won't spoil anything. Here is review on Goodreads.

That definitely sounds like an interesting book! I don't usually read mysteries or thrillers but this one looks good.

New author to me. That beginning is brutal! The 56 is intriguing ... (I probably wouldn't pick it up based on the cover though)
