BookBeginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and The Friday 56 - hosted by Freda’s Voice both host sites for Friday link ups, where we discover more books, and make friends.
Both involve sharing excerpts from a current book - the beginning and surprise, surprise - page 56.
Let's start with page 56.
I've been loving The Stars are Fire by Anita Shreve - it's the story of Grace and her family, who are involved in the 1947 Maine fires. In this excerpt, Grace is worrying about her mother.

I thoroughly enjoyed this - the writing, the plot, the context. Don't you love that beginning?
Highly recommended, here's my review. Which cover do you like? They're so different, don't you think?
What are you reading? I'd love to know.

The beginning is interesting. It's doesn't have any descriptions about the scenery, but it conveys the obvious feeling of worry that the character is experiencing. I like it.
This sounds really good, and quite atmospheric already, the opening gives me a slightly claustrophobic feeling.
I love the second cover - that tiny waist! - but it also plays to my prejudices (Brutal truth that shows me in a bad light: I'd pigeon-hole it as Family Saga, and I might decide it is for elderly readers). I'd be more likely to pick up the blazing red cover.
Now I'm going to read your full review

The excerpts have piqued my curiosity. I had already been eyeing this one, and haven't read this author in a while. Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

I prefer the first cover. Sounds like a great read! Happy weekend!
Sounds like an interesting story. I've never read anything by the author. I am reading The Hunting Grounds by Katee Robert this week. Happy reading!
Such an interesting choice for time and event. I think I like the first cover better, but then, the second cover really represents the time period.
My Friday 56 from Exile For Dreamers
Me too. The writing is deceptively simple, I think:
Thanks for your comments. - good point about the "prettier" cover. I doubt I'd pick it up, but now that I've read the book, I love it...😂
She gets better and better. I enjoyed your blog.
Yes, it is lovely, Thanks Freda.
All your reads have such gorgeous covers. Hope you have a wonderful week!
