Friday Books - The Girls

On Fridays I participate in BookBeginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and The Friday 56 - hosted by Freda’s Voice. Both involve sharing excerpts from a current book - the beginning and - you guessed it - page 56.

This week's book-

Click the cover for the Goodreads blurb.

Beginning:
I looked up because of the laughter, and kept looking because of the girls. I noticed their hair first, long and uncombed. Then their jewelry catching the sun. The three of them were far enough away that I saw only the periphery of their features, but it didn't matter - I knew they were different from everyone else in the park.

Here's my P56

"Asshole," she muttered, but she wasn't really mad. That was part of being a girl - you were resigned to whatever feedback you'd get. If you got mad, you were crazy, and if you didn't react, you were a bitch. The only thing you could do was smile from the corner they'd backed you into. Implicate yourself in the joke, even if the joke was always on you.

I'm LOVING this book. I entered a competition online to win a copy, but didn't, so when I saw it I grabbed it. I'm about 200 pages in, and the writing is wonderful. The bonus is it is gripping too. A little edgy, and probably not for the sensitive reader. Hope it continues in this vein - I'll definitely finish it this weekend.

Tell me what you're reading, and I'll pay you a visit.

Happy reading everyone.

It does sound good. Glad you enjoyed it. Isn't it fun to discover a book through a contest, even though you don't win. I've bought many books that way:)I wait to see if I won, and when I didn't, I went and got the book.

This sounds good. I'm featuring a historical mystery this week - These Honored Dead by Jonathan F. Putnam. Abraham Lincoln stars. Happy reading!

Hi Bev! I've bought this book on Tuesday!!!!!! Can't wait to start reading it and your teaser is just making it worse. I have a couple of books I need to get through first though... But thanks for sharing! Here's my Friday Meets: http://marelithalkink.blogspot.co.za/2016/08/friday-meets-05-august-2016.html

This sounds so good! It's been tempting me but I decided to wait until I saw a few reviews as their was so much buzz about it. It sounds like I need to go get it now! That 56 is so heartbreaking. You can almost feel her defeated feeling. You have to put up with being made fun of or you're called names.

I love how real the writing felt when reading those snippets. Sounds like a great read! Happy weekend!

I like the description in the opening. The writer gives us first impressions -- the glinting jewelry, the long tangled hair. I like that a lot.
My Friday post features STEALING JASON WILDE.

I've seen this book around and I am intrigued. Does it usually have a different cover? A close-up of a girls face with sunglasses? Is it about Charles Manson? Or am I confusing this with another book?

There is another cover- yes writing in the sunglasses. Same book, different cover. Thanks for your comments everyone. It's getting even better.

There, found the cover you meant, Anne and added it. 😉

Don't know about Charles Manson. Will let you know when done.

I've seen this book in emails with the red and blue cover. I like "edgy."

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I've got myself on hold for the audio copy - I think it'll be a long wait though...

Check out my Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings) and my TTT.

The answer is yes. The book is loosely based on the Charles Manson story. But I read it not knowing that and think I enjoyed it more because of that. Here's my review: http://bevbouwer.blogspot.co.za/2016/08/the-girls-by-emma-cline.html
